Course Syllabus

Abstract

Principles of Health Law and Regulatory Issues Executives in healthcare systems must have an understanding of healthcare legal and regulatory issues surrounding finance and risk as well as compliance within the law in order to navigate and change the system. This course is a survey course that covers a wide range of important issues in health law. This course is part of the Certified Lifestyle Medicine Executive MicroMasters program. What you'll learn: -Discuss health law and how it shapes physician-patient relations; -Explore the subgroup of laws that control access to health care; -Examine the principles of informed consent for medical treatment; -Evaluation of basic medical malpractice suits; -Examine bioethics in healthcare

Learning Objectives

  • The course is aimed at providing an understanding of the legal foundations of bioethics. During the course students will learn: - what bioethics in healthcare is; - what are the most pressing issues in contemporary bioethics and what legal issues they entail; - what are the main approaches to solving bioethical problems and how states address them through their legislation and policy.

  • know basic terminology and conceptual framework in bioethics;
  • understand where these issues come from and what solutions are offered to mitigate their adverse effect in the society;
  • generally analyze and interpret national and international approaches to regulation of various bioethical issues;
  • acquire basic skills in doing research in the field of law & bioethics;
  • understand the impact bioethical knowledge for lawyers and lifescience professionals;
  • assist in drafting policy documents on bioethical issues;

  • Introductory lectures: getting to know the rules and the people. Foundations, sources and principles of bioethics.

  • cases of medical errors and a gradual change in their types;
  • legal aspects and principles of informed consent;
  • medical law and its impact on the doctor-patient relationship;
  • legal acts on access to medical care.
