HSE University Faculty of Law Presents Results of Research Project "Law and Art"

This year’s tangible results included an interactive calendar featuring masterpieces of Russian painting from the collection of the State Russian Museum, as well as a book titled "Law and Art," comprising two sections dedicated to world-famous paintings and classical plays.

Mr. Vladislav Davankov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, noted in his welcome address: "When we view legislation not only as the letter of the law but also as reflected in art, we gain insight into the processes unfolding in society. It is especially significant, I believe, that this work is being carried out at the HSE University Faculty of Law — one of the most important academic and educational institutions supporting our legislative efforts."

Mr. Vadim Vinogradov, Dean of the HSE University Faculty of Law, emphasized the prevalence of legal themes in art: "These may be explicitly legal subjects, such as in Louis de Boullogne the Younger's painting 'The Judgment of Solomon,' or legal themes may serve as a backdrop, as in Chekhov's 'The Cherry Orchard.' Our research shows that law is present everywhere, even in narratives not directly connected to it."

Mr. Grigory Zaslavsky, Rector of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS), highlighted the value of the research for theatre professionals: "Exploring legal dimensions within plays opens up unexpected opportunities for directors. Circumstances, eras, and social structures in the countries where these plays were written may change. However, understanding key legal conflicts is far better than remaining unaware. This is a remarkable outcome of the project."

Mr. Ilya Doronchenkov, Deputy Director for Research at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, commented on the project's growing scope: "I am very pleased to see this project acquiring increasingly serious dimensions each year. I believe this marks the beginning of even more significant academic endeavors."

Ms. Elena Sharnova, Associate Professor at the School of Historical Sciences (Faculty of Humanities) and Academic Council Member of the "Art History" programme, noted that the project enriches researchers' appreciation not only of legal aspects but also of the artistic techniques behind the paintings.

The presentation also featured speeches by Mr. Alexander Larichev - Deputy Dean for Research, Mr. Sergey Nagikh - Head of the School of Theory of Law and Comparative Law, Ms. Svetlana Vashurina - Head of the Project Group "Law and Art: Facets of Interaction." The event was attended by representatives of HSE University, government bodies, partner organizations (including law firms), as well as students and the faculty academic staff.
