HSE University Faculty of Law representatives participate in BRICS Legal Studies Summer School in Brazil

From July 27 to August 1, the Federal University of Minas Gerais hosted the BRICS Legal Studies Summer School in Belo Horizonte (Brazil). The event brought together professors, postgraduate students, and students from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the UAE, and other countries. The 2026 program focused on in-depth study of the founding BRICS states legal systems: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

 

The HSE University Faculty of Law was represented by Mr. Mikhail Zhuravlev, Associate Professor at the School of Digital Law and Bio-Law, and Mr. Igor Klementyev, a first-year postgraduate student at the Doctoral School in Law (specializing in Public Law). Mr. Mikhail Zhuravlev delivered a presentation on current challenges in the legal regulation of digital technologies in the Russian Federation as part of the section devoted to the legal systems of BRICS countries.

"The Summer School provided an opportunity to explore the legal frameworks of various jurisdictions in an interdisciplinary format. This is a valuable experience both for students and for researchers building international academic connections" - noted Mr. Mikhail Zhuravlev

Mr. Igor Klementyev attended lectures and seminars and actively engaged in professional dialogue with representatives from different countries during the interactive sessions included in the Summer School program.

"For me, the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of the legal systems of BRICS countries is particularly important, as my PhD research focuses on rule-making by executive authorities in BRICS countries" - emphasized Mr. Igor Klementyev.

The Federal University of Minas Gerais is an active member of the BRICS Law Schools Consortium, initiated by the HSE University Faculty of Law. During a separate meeting with the university's Rector and representatives of the law faculty, promising areas of cooperation were outlined, including joint publications, participation in academic events, and joint applications for research grants. In addition to the academic program, the organizers arranged a rich cultural itinerary. Participants visited the city of Ouro Preto, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where they had the opportunity to explore the history of the state of Minas Gerais and the historical background of Brazilian statehood.
