About the Laboratory

The main goal of the Laboratory of International Justice is to conduct scientific research related to the functioning and the effectiveness of the institutions of international justice. The mentioned institutions include the International Court of Justice, WTO dispute settlement body, regional human rights courts and integration associations, international investment arbitration, international commercial arbitration.

Special attention is given to current issues of interaction of Russia with the bodies of international justice at the present stage. In addition, the issues faced by Russian individuals when contacting these authorities are also in the focus of our attention.

The Laboratory of International Justice has been functioning since 2018. Over the years, the following projects have been implemented:

2019

“Russia in the Modern Architecture of International Justice”

2020

“Implementation of decisions of international courts in a multipolar world”

2021

“Improvement of national legal remedies in the Russian Federation in the context of enforcement of decisions of international courts”

2022

“Adoption of general measures on the basis of the decisions of international courts: in the search for a balance between subsidiarity and obligation”

In 2023, the work of the Laboratory of International Justice is carried out within the project of “Protection of economic and property rights through international justice mechanisms”. The project is dedicated to the analysis of the effectiveness of existing means of protection (in particular, international investment arbitration, regional human rights courts and integration associations, WTO dispute settlement body, international commercial arbitration). The research takes into account the changes in 2022, in addition, it also aimed at the search for new remedies (in particular, transfer of dispute resolution to alternative, neutral jurisdictions, increased use of non-jurisdictional means of settlement of disputes), which could help to protect violated rights of Russian business actors.

The laboratory collaborates actively with experts in the field of international law and justice, arbitrators and legal practitioners. Seminars, round tables devoted to discussion of current issues of international justice, are regularly held here.

Results of research conducted in the laboratory are reflected in publications by staff members and research interns.
