The decision was based on a claim brought by Ukraine concerning alleged violations of the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism of 9 December 1999 and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination of 21 December 1965. As grounds for the Court's jurisdiction, the applicant invoked Articles 24 and 22 of the Conventions respectively.

In its judgment, the Court rejected a substantial part of Ukraine's claims, including the payment of compensation.

Among the representatives of the Russian team was Kata Varga, a graduate of HSE Law School's "Law of International Trade and Dispute Resolution" Master Programme.
