Research project: International Competition ‘Dispute Resolution in the EAEU–2024’: Preparation and Participation of the Faculty of Law's Team

The project aims to prepare the HSE University Faculty of Law's student team for successful participation in the "Dispute Resolution in the EAEU–2024" competition.

Launched in 2017, the "Dispute Resolution in the EAEU" competition is a classic moot court simulating the proceedings before the Court of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Every year, several dozen teams from all EAEU member states (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia) participate in this competition. Among the judges of the competition are leading experts in the field of EAEU law, including representatives of the Union's bodies, state authorities, academic community and practicing lawyers. This makes it one of the most prestigious competitions on the topic of Eurasian integration for law students. The moot court strives to develop a new generation of international law specialists in the EAEU states, capable of effectively representing the interests of both the state structures and business communities of their countries in international courts.

HSE University (Moscow) has been successfully participating in the competition since its first years. In 2024, the team of the Faculty of Law won the competition, and in earlier years it took prize places (2nd and 3rd) and received various awards for participation in the written and oral phases of the competition.

By taking part in this project, students will enhance their legal writing and oral presentation skills in Russian. They will also learn to construct independent legal arguments when tackling practical international law issues, as well as search for and analyze EAEU law sources. The quality of learned skills is reflected in written procedural documents prepared for both sides of the dispute, as well as oral pleadings at the competition, which are evaluated by judges and delivered to the teams.

In 2024, the team was coached by Aleksei Petrenko, Associate Professor at the School of International Law, and by Anton Maslov, an expert at the International BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre. A year earlier, faculty graduates Valeria Matorina and Yana Prigoda served as its coaches.

The winning team of the “Dispute Resolution in the EAEU-2024” competition included: Vladislav Dolbusin, Maria Naumova (2nd and 3rd year of Bachelor's degree, “Law” program), Valentina Vlasova (1st year of Master's degree, “Law of International Trade and Dispute Resolution” program) and Valeria Asoskova (1st year of Master's degree, “Business Lawyer” program).
