Twelve teams from all over Russia took part in the national rounds. The teams represented fictional states as applicants and respondents before the International Court of Justice. This year's case addressed the burning issues of climate change impact on maritime zones; recognition of governments; immunities of state officials accused of human rights violations; and interpretation of the dispute resolution clause in the treaty establishing a regional organization.

HSE team in 2025 consisted of:

  • Maria Bessonova (2nd year Bachelor's student);
  • Angelina Vasiltsova (3rd year Bachelor's student);
  • Evan Lang (1st year Master's student in "Law of International Trade and Dispute Resolution");
  • Anastasia Santalova (graduate of the Master's program "Law of International Trade and Dispute Resolution");
  • Elizaveta Khmeleva (5th year Bachelor's student).

The team was coached by Matvey Tarasov (PhD Candidate of HSE Doctoral School of Law), Anastasia Burnakina (PhD Candidate of HSE Doctoral School of Law) and Alena Ilchenko (graduate of the Master's program "Law of International Trade and Dispute Resolution").

HSE team competed in the advanced rounds and received several awards.  The Law Faculty team was awarded for the 3rd place in the "Best Memorial"nomination, and two team members were among the top-3 (Evan Lang) and top-4 (Maria Bessonova) best speakers of the Russian Championship. Besides, Matvey Tarasov won the "Best Coach" award.

The competition was judged by lawyers from leading firms and scholars in the field of public international law both from Russia and many other countries worldwide. The presiding judge of the final round was HSE Professor Vera Rusinova, who hold the proceeding together with Professor Rein Muellerson (former President of the Institut de Droit International) and Judge Roman Kolodkin (International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea).

Congratulations to the team and coaches on their high results!
