This year, the HSE Faculty of Law team reached the final of the competition and took a worthy second place!

The Humanitarian Alliance team participated from our university. This year, the HSE University was represented by three students of the Faculty of Law:

  • Anna-Maria Popova, 4th year undergraduate student, International law track,
  • Angelina Vasiltsova, 3rd year undergraduate student, International law track,
  • Ivan Salychev, 3rd year undergraduate student, International law track.

The team members were selected through a rigorous selection process. Then, for several months, the students intensively studied international humanitarian law under the guidance of a coaching team: Professor Vera Rusinova, Roman Abrashin, a 5th year undergraduate student, International law track and Vitaly Magun, a 1st year master student of the program “Public Law”.

Traditionally, the F. F. Martens competition was held in the Moscow suburban, where the strongest law students from the CIS countries gathered. The main plot of the game cases was based on the work “Treasure Island”, which added spice to the events of the contest. In 3 days, the team played 7 rounds — our students offered legal advice to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in multilateral negotiations on the legality of the use of autonomous weapons systems under IHL. As part of the round “on the ground”, the team had to get used to the role of the ICRC’s legal advisers and check the conditions of interned civilians. A separate challenge was the final round, where the team participated in debates on topical issues of international humanitarian law (internment of civilians, the legitimacy of trials of prisoners of war). As a result, the team of the Faculty of Law took a worthy second place!

The wide variety and unique conditions of the competitive tasks allowed the team to demonstrate a high level of legal literacy and public speaking skills, which was also noted by the jury members.

Congratulations to the team, the coaches! We wish you success in participating in other international law competitions!
