Located at a crossroads of global, regional, and national interests, contemporary international law affects almost all spheres of society. The School of International Law keeps pace with significant international events and legal adjudication in order to provide hands-on education that prepares future lawyers and legal scholars for the demands of the current legal landscape. The School is at once a ‘think tank’ that provides expert analysis and a producer of top legal experts and lawyers in international law.

12 teams from all over Russia participated in the Russian rounds of the competition, and for the first time since 2020, the oral rounds of the Russian championship for teams were held in person at the Russian Arbitration Center. The HSE Faculty of Law team entered the top 4 teams that are winners of the Competition. Thus, the HSE team has been consistently among the winners of the Russian national rounds for 8 years in a row, which is an absolutely unique result among Russian teams.
The HSE team in 2023 includes:
The coaches of the team were Matvey Tarasov (PhD student of the PhD School for Law of the Higher School of Economics) and Alena Ilchenko (1st year student of the Master's program on International Trade Law and Dispute Resolution).
Together with excellent results in the overall standings, the HSE team took awards from each presented category of the competition. Thus, the team of the Faculty of Law of HSE was awarded for 3rd place in the category "Best Memorandum," and 2 team members entered the top 5 and top 10 best speakers of the Russian championship (Anastasia Burnakina - 5th place, Victoria Polshakova - 9th place).
The HSE team competed for the Russian Jessup Cup with teams from Moscow State University. O.E. Kutafina, RANEPA, RGUP (Kazan branch), Tyumen State University and Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov.
The Philip Jessup Competition was established in 1959 as an international law competition in English, which is held in a form of a simulation of the consideration of the case by the International Court of Justice. To date, the Jessup Competition is the largest and one of the most famous and prestigious moot courts in the world. About 3,000 students from more than 700 universities from 100 countries take part in it every year. Despite the remote format this year, the number of participants remained consistently high.
The 2023 case was devoted to the interpretation of the peace treaty, the qualification of attacks on the allegedly occupied territory, unilateral economic sanctions and the legal consequences of non-compliance with hazardous waste disposal rules.
Congratulations to the team and coaches with excellent results and great luck in the competition next year!
A new recruitment for the team is planned in September-October 2023. Please follow the news on the website of the Faculty of Law and the official page of the HSE team on Vkontakte at the link https://vk.com/hsejessup.
